Colby is a rising fourth-year PhD student in the Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics graduate group at the University of Pennsylvania. His research leverages deep learning-based protein design to advance Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccine research under the mentorship of Dr. Amelia Escolano at the Wistar Institute. Colby has received multiple distinctions since starting his PhD, including first place in the Winter Protein Design Games hosted by Liberum Biotech and Rosetta Commons and the Norman L. Letvin Early Career Investigator Award from the Gates Foundation. He earned dual Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Biochemistry and Computer Science from Providence College, where he was a member of the Liberal Arts Honors Program and a recipient of multiple honors, including the Goldwater Scholarship. Colby has been actively involved with the Penn Biotech Group (PBG) for three years, contributing to five consulting projects and participating in a range of professional development programs, including the PBG Biotech Investment series in which he placed in the stock pitch competition. In his free time, Colby enjoys nature, playing soccer, and spending time with his dog, Rocco.
