Our story

From a Wharton student idea to Penn's largest graduate consulting club

Penn Biotech Group was co-founded in 2001 by Wharton MBA students, including Ben Doranz, who went on to co-found Integral Molecular.

What started as a group of students interested in the business of biotechnology has grown into the largest graduate consulting club at Penn, with more than 300 members a year from 9 of Penn's 12 graduate and professional schools.

PBG is a student club under the Wharton Graduate Association. Today it runs semester-long consulting projects for real clients, an annual healthcare case competition, the Wharton Biotech Conference, and training programs in consulting and biotech investing. In 2026, PBG celebrated its 25th anniversary.

How a project works

The 10-week consulting model

Every fall and spring, PBG staffs teams on projects for biotech, pharma, MedTech, and healthcare clients.

Step 1

Join a team

Members apply for a project at the start of the semester. Each team has a Project Director, a Project Manager, and 6–10 Team Members.

Step 2

Work the problem

Over ten weeks, teams meet weekly and each member commits 3–10 hours a week to research and analysis.

Step 3

Deliver results

Teams present their findings and recommendations to the client, on questions ranging from strategy and marketing to pricing, revenue modeling, and IP.
